A New Interchange in 2011

Upgrading the interchange at McCallum Road and Highway 1 is one of the City of Abbotsford’s highest transportation priorities.

This project will improve safety, accommodate higher traffic volumes today and in the future, and provide better access to Abbotsford’s commercial centre, public institutions, key community amenities, and other local destinations.

The upgrade plans include more lanes over Highway 1, longer deceleration lanes on both sides of the highway and changes to the traffic pattern to ensure that peak volume traffic does not back up onto the highway.

New bike lanes and sidewalks are also included in the plans, along with a new park-and-ride lot that will support carpooling and accommodate transit plans for the future.

Total project cost is estimated at $25 million, cost-shared by the City of Abbotsford, Government of British Columbia and the Government of Canada.

A contract to construct the interchange has been awarded to Westpro Infrastructure Ltd.  Construction is underway and continuing through until Spring 2011.
